      • Aug 2021 - Sep 2021

As part of an extramural rotation in my D4 year (4th year of dental school), I worked with those at the Siouxland Community Health Center to learn about how a Federally-Qualified Health Center runs and operates. For my five weeks there, I was seeing patients, learning the software, and getting to know what sorts of targets and goals were trying to be met for the populations seen there. Because there were several dentists there, I learned about different philosophies regarding procedures and treatment planning.

As an undergraduate researcher in the Agronomy Department, I worked closely 14 different biochars in order to characterize them. Specifically, I was characterizing the PZNC, or point of zero net charge of the chars. By understanding how feedstocks, preparation methods, and treatments can affect the PZNC, the optimal char can be used to take harmful oxyanions such as sulfates and arsenates out of soil and water sources. During this time I:• Executed point of zero salt effect method to determine point of zero net charge (PZNC) of biochars• Analyzed samples with instruments such as ICP and Ion chromatography• Created and standardized solutions using titration methods • Planned and executed varied methods to determine the adsorption and desorption of sulfate for the biochars

During this time, I:• Manipulated conditions in electrochemical cell solutions (solutions, conditions of plating various metals, washing methods, length of experiment, etc)• Analyzed samples using GCs• Examined data to determine future routes for the project• Synthesized inorganic compounds using flux, filtration, and evaporation methods
