Social worker in England

Feb 1987 - Feb 2000
Social worker in England Lancashire County Council February – February 2000 (13 years 1 month) Lancashire In the UK, I worked with a diverse client population including Traveller, Circus and Fairground children. For a number of years,I was the only social worker who worked with this population in Lancashire, visiting illegal encampments, government run sites, and Travelers who had settled in homes. The focus of my work was to connect children and families with resources which they had difficulty accessing, such as health care, education and community supports. I left this position after 10 years and moved to working with students who were on the verge of permanent exclusion from the school environment or who had been excluded. These children and youth were often marginalized in many other areas of their lives, and working with them using a holistic model sometimes helped to move them away from their entrenched behaviors. Working with families who did not value education was a challenge but resulted in many successes. Before immigrating to Canada, I was successful in raising the attendance rate at Ribbleton Hall High (a school with one of the lowest attendance rates in England) by 14% from May 1999 to February 2000. Setting goals for students and parents, using positive reinforcement and at times following through with court action, along with an unwavering commitment to the community, made this one of the most enjoyable jobs that I have ever done!
