BCLocalRoot.ca is an online market with home delivery and curbside pick up of 100% BC grown and made food. Our mission is to engage and empower our communities to choose an economic and food secure future by purchasing BC only food and beverage products. Our online market currently has 470+ BC products from 70 brands representing 9 regions in the province. With more than 4,000 food and beverage brands in our province, we believe that everything we truly need is right here at home in BC. Supporting BC brands has a positive impact on the people in our communities, local food security, the local economy, and the environment. Our Roots:Good to Grow, created in 2011, is a teaching, coaching, mentoring, and industry event company working to support local BC producers and processors to introduce and grow their brands in multiple market channels. We work with BC food and beverage brands in all stages of business: Seed (start-up), Sprout (emerging) and Growth (expansion). The devastation that transpired as a result of COVID-19 created both a challenge and an opportunity for our local food community. It severely impacted small producers and processors sales due to the closure of farmers’ markets, restaurants, and food trucks as well as halted any new grocery listings. The pandemic also highlighted our reliance on imported products as shelves were left empty due to disruptions in the global supply chains. In an effort to support local food security and celebrate all BC has to offer, Good to Grow reached out to local producers and processors and created an on-line grocery platform for BC ONLY food and beverage products called BCLocalRoot.ca. As a trusted mentor and educator within the BC food and beverage arena, it was a natural progression for Good to Grow to expand its role supporting BC brands and create a place for food producers and processors to sell their products.https://bclocalroot.ca/

I researched sustainable packaging options for Blume. This included understanding the biodegradable and compostable packaging market in B.C., Canada, and the US; reaching out to suppliers; and securing quotes. Encompassed in this research was understanding the current local regulatory context as well as the technological capacity for compostable products post-consumer use, in other words, what actually happens to these products once the consumer is done with them versus what the manufacturer says can happen to them. This is a very relevant and important component of packaging for businesses to learn about! In addition to my sustainability focused tasks I assisted with social media and reaching out to influencers.

I was a contract researcher for the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) and the Northwest Power and Conservation Council (NWPCC) under the guidance of the Universities Consortium on Columbia River Governance (UCCRG). Myself and a student from Oregon worked together to complete a research report titled, "A Preliminary Assessment of Transboundary Initiatives in the International Columbia River Basin". The entire project included:- Completing an inventory and assessment of existing transboundary cooperative initiatives in the Columbia River Basin. Starting with a literature review and suggestions from the CBT and NWPCC.- Creating a short profile of each initiative in terms of purpose & function (e.g., coordinating fish and wildlife management, sharing scientific and technical data, and objectives of the transboundary initiative), organizational structure, accomplishments, key contacts, and date of creation- Interviewing people associated with each initiative to identify what is/is not working, and what the most compelling needs and interests are- Prepare a report that synthesizes the findings and conclusions- Presenting the findings and conclusions at the August 2015 joint meeting of NWPCC and CBT in Missoula, Montana
