Program Associate - Teen Health Council
-
Jun 2016 - Aug 2017
I assisted the Mikva Challenge Teen Health Council and Youth Action Council by co-facilitating a program for high school students focused on empowering youth voice to identify pervasive health concerns in their schools and communities. I was able to apply public health theory and knowledge to practice by introducing students to the social determinants of health, socio-ecologic model, and root-cause analysis. We also facilitated discussions to discover what students know about access to mental health, affordability, stigma, and legal/privacy right and trained students on primary research skills such as survey creation and focus group facilitation. In addition, I served as a resource for students as they researched interventions to address the gaps in knowledge and services for mental health in Chicago Public Schools. Show less

As the Organizing Intern, I advanced young people’s sexual health, identities, and rights by engaging various stakeholders and facilitating CHAT youth and adult network meetings. I promoted ICAH’s Title IX model policy adoption by coordinating meetings with decision-makers (CPS School Board) and working with youth leaders to develop advocacy materials. I worked towards developing a Birth Justice pamphlet/brochure for healthcare providers by conducting surveys and organizing youth-moderated focus groups to collect perspectives from health practitioners.
