Meghan and I came to know each other when we worked together on a community service event at our kids' school. I was co-Chair, and Meghan was a parent volunteer who helped us behind the scenes on a number of decidedly unglamorous but necessary tasks. Meghan was such a standout! She committed early, made it to every meeting, offered thoughtful input, and importantly, delivered on her promises. Many other volunteers lost interest along the way, but Meghan established herself as a professional who could be depended upon. I’ve since come to know her better outside the context of the event. She’s the rare individual who gets the big picture, but never, ever loses sight of the small things. Meghan sees around corners to anticipate needs and is agile and focused when the curve balls come. She is charismatic, articulate and incredibly genuine, inspiring trust at all levels. Her intellectual curiosity is limitless; she asks great questions and cares about the answers. And Meghan does what she says she will, always with grace.

To Whom It May Concern, I am very pleased to write this letter for Meghan Holmes. When I was the elementary school principal at Bluff Creek Elementary in Chanhassen, Minnesota, Meghan was an outstanding parent volunteer. She was dedicated to supporting all students and helping to provide rich learning opportunities for our students. Meghan's most amazing contribution was her role in initiating, facilitating and fine tuning our Bluff Creek School Garden. Meghan is highly collaborative and she worked with our gifted services facilitator, PTO and staff to create an exceptional school garden for our school. Meghan researched school gardens, attended the School Garden conference ( at least twice) worked with the MN Landscape Arboretum and Master Gardeners from the University of Minnesota and sought out community support to build and expand the school garden at Bluff Creek. Meghan works well with people and her connections with students, staff and parents helped to create a learning environment that was inclusive and inviting. Meghan found learning resources, worked with students and was never afraid to literally get her hands dirty. She organized a family volunteer summer watering program that helped our garden thrive over the summer, which resulted in a school garden culture not found in any of our other elementary schools. Meghan presented to the School Garden Conference and was honored by District 112 for her outstanding contributions. Meghan is enthusiastic, organized and dedicated to supporting others and would be an asset to any program that seeks to build collaboration and support for others. Meghan is an exceptional person who is committed to excellence. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. Warmly, Joan MacDonald

As co-chair of the Family Community Services committee, I organize and coordinate a variety of events throughout the school year. These events are opportunities for the Breck community to extend volunteer experience into causes within the Twin Cities. Additionally, I have worked to develop new relationships with a broader array of non-profits, which would benefit from our school community’s efforts. As a volunteer, I established a school garden program at Bluff Creek Elementary school (Chanhassen, MN) to promote the use of 'green' learning in the elementary setting, to encourage children to have a broader understanding of STEM topics, and the world around them. Due to the success of this project, educators and parents from other schools in multiple districts have used the framework I established to build their own garden programs. The role of coordinator involved strong communication with school administrators, teachers, community partners/sponsors, volunteers, and the greater school community. Additionally, the role I created involved program development, hands-on learning with students, financial spreadsheets, budgeting, event planning, maintaining social media, conference presentations, grant application writing, and solicitation of donations from local and national sponsors. Lakewinds Food Co-operative became the primary supporter through their Community Outreach program with donations of soil, seeds and plants on a yearly basis. I initiated a program with People Reaching Out to People (PROP) food shelf in Eden Prairie, MN to raise awareness of economic needs within the school and greater community, by incorporating garden-direct food donations by families. Additionally, the program works in partnership with the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners (Carver-Scott County), and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture's "MN Ag in the Classroom" program.
