My study examined the feasibility of chaparral restoration in a Mediterranean-type climate, on a type-converted landscape in San Timoteo Canyon, Riverside County, California. The objectives of this study were to (1) compare the effectiveness of the broad-spectrum herbicide, glyphosate, to that of the grass specific herbicide, fluazifop, at eliminating non-native annual grasses; (2) compare the success of seeding or planting native seedlings as a means of restoration; (3) analyze the soil seed bank to determine if there was a relict native species seed bank on site; (4) test the field application of smoke-water as a technique to manipulate the soil’s native shrub seed-bank for restoration. Results indicate that winter herbicide treatment will eliminate competitive non-native annual grasses early in the growing season, resulting in increased soil moisture availability for chaparral shrubs to utilize. In addition, I performed GIS analysis and reconstructed the fire history of the Canyon and adjacent lands. I did this in order to analyze what portion of the landscape had experienced short fire return intervals to determine current resource conditions. I was able to determine the resource management issue of type-conversion due to frequent fire is a concern in the San Timoteo Canyon. Additionally, I utilized historical air photos from 1938, and current air photos (2012) to distinguish if there was a considerable change in shrub cover in the study area using remote sensing techniques. There was a significant decrease in shrub cover in the study area.Additionally, I performed a dose-response experiment in the lab on non-native annual grass seeds. I tested the response of several non-native annual grass seed after treating them with smoke-water, to see how they respond. Only one species showed an increased response to smoke-water, while the other two showed to significant response to smoke-water. Show less
