My responsibilities in various roles ranging from managing litigated claims, preparing annual Appropriation Bills and supporting their passage through Parliament, briefing and collaboration with stakeholders (including the Office of Parliamentary Counsel and the Australian Government Solicitor), providing general advice on appropriation matters, managing amendments to the Appropriation Acts, drafting legislative instruments and explanatory statements. This has exposed me to a variety of administrative and constitutional legal issues. For example, my team assisted the Department in their response to a High Court challenge to advance appropriations to a Commonwealth entity for expenditure associated with the Australian Marriage Law Survey. Between 2010 and 2019 I mentored students enrolled in the GDLP program at the ANU Legal Workshop and various undergraduate courses in the Research School of Accounting in a part-time capacity. My role extended to a number of courses including Business Law, Commercial Practice, Civil Litigation, Wills and Estates. I was responsible for teaching legal concepts (both face to face and online); assessment of student learning outcomes; providing timely feedback; responding to student questions; and maintaining relevant records. My role at Comcover Member Services included managing a varied portfolio of Commonwealth litigated claims ranging from general liability, professional indemnity and industrial law matters. Duties attached to this position included: assessment of new claims/ liability; client liaison; briefing counsel and legal representatives from the Whole of Australian Government Legal Services Panel; assisting with investigation and discovery in litigated matters; and settling disputes in accordance with public sector regulations including the Legal Services Directions (Governed by the Attorney-General’s Department). My role as a solicitor primarily representing a range of insurers included: drafting legal advice; conducting research and analysis of legal issues; preparation of court documents (including originating applications and interrogatories); briefing counsel on matters ranging from workers compensation, public liability, debt recovery and wills; preparations for hearing (including discovery and gathering of evidence). I liaised with key stakeholders including senior partners and members of staff, clients and third parties in the course of litigation. I acted in accordance with instructions and professional and ethical guidelines and was required to represent the firm at settlement conferences and appear before the court on routine administrative matters and interlocutory proceedings including directions hearings and case conferences.
