During my community service year, I was determined to simultaneously improve my clinical veterinary skills. As a result, I was a locum veterinarian at South City Vet (sole charge) afterhours and over weekends. This position entailed providing primary health care to small animals, performing routine surgeries and dental procedures, diagnosing and treating animals with infectious diseases and providing emergency care. In order to keep up to date with my clinical skills during my community service year, I provided pro bono veterinary services at the Animal Welfare Society in Port Elizabeth. During this period, I worked under the head veterinarian and gained experience. My position as state veterinarian was closely linked to the AWS as it involved crisis management during a rabies outbreak in the region. When working at AWS, I performed several surgeries (including emergency surgeries), emergency euthanasias, diagnosing and treating diseases including Babesia, Ehrlichia, Parvo, mange, tick and flea infestations, HGE, Infectious canine hepatitis and several others. The experience I whilst working at the welfare is invaluable. Show less

As a new graduate veterinarian in South Africa, we are required to complete a year of compulsory community service. During my CCS year, I fulfilled the position of an import/export state veterinarian in Port Elizabeth (Eastern Cape). The core duty of this job involved ensuring compliance by companies with the protocols set out by the Department of Agriculture and Forestry for the export of wool, mohair, skins and hides. Once the aforementioned is acceptable, I am responsible for issuing a veterinary certificate. In addition to this, we performed numerous abattoir, processing plant and cold storage inspections in order to prevent the spread of infectious zoonotic diseases, thus playing an important role in the public health sector. Good communication, crisis management and attention to detail was essential for this position. Show less
