Originating in UVA's Curry School of Education - Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning, My Teaching Partner is a video coaching professional development program for teachers. In this program, the teacher and a coach work "together throughout the school year to analyze and improve teacher interactions taking place in the classroom. The process follows a systematic cycle in which teachers videotape themselves, and analyze their practice with the guidance of a coach." • Science Teacher
      • Aug 2006 - May 2014

I taught Chemistry and Physics in the Science Department. I completely overhauled the CP Chemistry curriculum, focusing on developing more core skills and more robust standard and non-traditional assessments of students, many whom faced learning challenges.

    • Dean, Class of 2011
      • May 2007 - Jun 2009

Served as academic advisor and guidance counselor to the 92 students in this class.

    • Doctoral Student in Biology
      • Aug 2014 - Dec 2019

During my doctoral training, I had two areas of focus: virology research and biological sciences pedagogy at the higher education level. Virology Research: My project focused on the transcriptional regulation of the persistent adenovirus infection of lymphocytes. We recently reported a link between the metabolic state of the lymphocytes and viral gene expression, indicating a possible mechanism for the reactivation of the virus that results in deadly viremia for pediatric transplant recipients. Pedagogy: Along with my faculty advisor Dr. Charlese Benson, I co-developed and co-taught a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) focused on using flow cytometry to assess genotoxic stress of immune cells following exposure to radiation. We obtained IRB approval to study science literacy and self-efficacy of the CURE students. Under the guidance of my pedagogy mentor Dr. Robert Maxwell, I also developed a tool to assess CURE student self-efficacy in demonstration of career-readiness competencies. These activities allowed me to obtain the Certificate of Excellence in College Teaching.
