Within the past fifty years, obesity in the U.S. has increased by more than half, and its prevalence increases significantly in low-income communities and communities of color, with obesity rates for black and Latino adolescents almost double that of white youth. While parents play a key role in their children’s health, they are often left out of the equation. Through participatory projects and inductive interviews with parents involved in Boston’s Green Dragons martial arts and nutrition program, this study assessed the role of parents and community in their children’s health education. It also assessed the specific effectiveness of the Green Dragons curriculum in youth health education. The research suggested that more intense parental and community involvement as well as a more holistic approach to nutrition and fitness education can greatly increase health behavior improvements in youth.
