David Parry

David was the first Product Owner, who I have worked with that was dedicated to passionately solving the needs of the industry. He demonstrated his passion by his actions in his everyday standup meetings to ensure the Product was being steered on the correct course. His devotion was demonstrated on one occasion when he, on his own free time joined citizens fire academy and citizens police academy to better understand the needs of one type of our users. His background in development was demonstrated by his unique ability to disseminate the requirements to different types of product contributors. He possesses the knowledge in the fields of scrum and agile to know it is not a magic bullet but instead is able to pull what fits out of it and make it work. Unlike some of my experiences on a team creating a product, David took on the role seriously and owned it. It showed where he empowered me to focus on the technical side, this allowed me to put 100% of my effort on the design and implementation and not worry or have to come up with a wrong

David is one of the most well rounded executives I have had the pleasure to work with over my career. His technical ability is second to none but always knows when to ask questions of the experts. He brings a wealth of experience to any assignment. His calm and focused approach is always welcomed working on difficult issues. I would gladly work with David again in the future.

Taqua was a start up company that was eventually purchased by Tekelec. I worked for a manager in David's organization. David was hired as VP of Engineering at Taqua during a particularly tumultuous time of our company. We had field quality issues, could not keep control of features, were struggling financially, etc. David came in and literally changed the culture of the engineering organization. He studies people and process (he has tons of books on the subject) and started evolving our development and testing process to be in line with his vision of success. He focused on making sure individuals were tasked with 'one thing at a time', he limited interruptions, and enforced a regimented process of continual quality improvement based on iterative development, test automation, and quality checks at every step of the process. We went from an organization for which a given weekly build delivered to the test department may not even boot correctly to a organization which was building 2 - 3 times a week, and every build was a feature and quality improvement over its predecessor. Our problems in the field declined dramatically and the amount of features we got more feature in shorter periods of time, with fewer people in the organization. This leads me to David's management of people. When he arrived we had too many people and were loosing too much money. He had to make tough decisions to let people go, but he was there to reassure everyone left that we were moving in a good direction and that things would improve. He was an executive that seemed to truly care about the lowest level engineer ... someone that everyone could respect and not be 'mad at' for having to make tough decisions. David did not solicit this recommendation from me, I just felt compelled to write something because I truly respected him as a person and as a executive and feel like he deserves all of the credit he can get for his actions and work ethic that I personally witnessed for nearly 5 years.

As part of an effort to improve the leadership culture of Lexipol, I taught a leadership curriculum that spanned 5 courses in leadership, communications and Theory of Constraints as well as providing executive coaching to senior leaders across the company. The outcome was greatly improved employee engagement scores, reductions in turnover and greater hiring success. I co-founded this SaaS, angel funded startup. We successfully employed methods for producing high product value with short schedules, using a small team and small capital outlay. We completed the first production release of the product, before shuttering the company when the angel funding was exhausted. I was responsible for leading Product Management, Software Development and DevOps for this small team. I met with prospective customers and stakeholders and employed Lean techniques in managing the development. We utilized OOA techniques to perform requirements capture and carried the object models through development. The FirstAware SaaS product integrated video, audio, IoT sensors and actuators, and building management systems into a single, intelligent safe/smart building system. The system utilized machine learning, rules management, floor plan management and mass notification to provide system status and automated actions for building management and situational awareness for first responders.
