MCK is deeply committed to his craft of communication - often showing and guiding others to a deeper understanding of it. I've been in awe of his superpower of asking insightful questions as well as synthesize information all while staying patient and centered. I've participated in many of the iterations of his courses and workshops and it's been fulfilling to witness and participate in the process.

When it comes to communication with other people, I'm great. But when it comes to communication with myself, that's where I sometimes struggle. I decided to join MasterCom because I didn’t want to struggle in those conversations anymore. The first thing I appreciated about my experience was the space to fully articulate what I was thinking and feeling. Doing it with someone who showed patience and care, but was also challenging me, enabled me to see quite a few things from a different perspective, which was so helpful. Also, even though they were technically letters to someone else, they were, even moreso, letters to myself. Secondly, MasterCom helped me to define how quality time with myself could look like and let me practice it every day. Because while am good at taking time for others, am struggling to take care of me. Thanks to MasterCom, I practiced looking at myself in a more objective way and being kinder to myself. And I realized I was judging myself for not accomplishing enough, based on my own standards. It was not always easy to face myself for each day of MasterCom. And while I felt the progress over the course of the month, I knew I needed a little something extra. The result of this is the creation of a very simple personalized tracking tool that I’ve still been using daily since the past 6 months. It gives me something concrete that both encourages me to move forward and reminds me of everything I’ve accomplished in times when I forget and am hard on myself. Today, the system is still not perfect, but I've seen the progress, I feel the progress, and I'm leaps and bounds beyond where I was earlier this year. MasterCom helped me develop confidence and the belief that I could continue to have these conversations regularly, on my own. And I got in the practice of being kinder to myself.

❓ Guiding Question: What happens when we practice a questions-first mindset... as we share about meaningful experiences and valuable learnings and hear others share about theirs?⭐ Three People Walking (3PW) was a weekly community event I stewarded to exchange personal insights, learned wisdom, and improve storytelling skills.⭐ Over 4'ish years, 500+ participated in these gatherings with many people joining on a regular basis. Attendees ranged from 5 to 65 and the sweet spot was somewhere between 25-35.⭐ People walked away feeling more connected, more curious, more open. People gained new insights, picked up helpful reminders, told better stories, and made friends. And through the first two years of the pandemic, the 3PW space helped us to maintain and build connection while being exposed to different perspectives through this weekly practice of sharing, understanding, and learning from each other during a time when tensions and uncertainty were high. ❓ Guiding Question: How does visual communication lead to the conversation(s) that improve your business bottom line? Starting a design studio, in a foreign country, with a business partner that didn't speak my first language, in an industry I knew nothing about was an incredible education in my 20s. Our studio provided branding, creative, and design services for entrepreneurs, small to medium-sized businesses, and multinational corporations. ⭐ I co-managed a team of 20 full-time and project based collaborators and learned what it was like to communicate with artists and information architects, photographers and printers, designers and developers. ⭐ We completed 100+ VI, logo, website, and print projects in the first 3 years for... ⭐ Microsoft, Nokia, Greenpeace, Société Générale, UPS, BSR, Shokay, and more. All those projects gave me a chance to connect with people across a range of industries with diverse backgrounds -- furniture and fashion, software and microfinance, education and dance, real estate and corporate training, logistics and PR, contemporary art and environmental advocacy, architecture and cybersecurity, movies and banking and mobile devices, solar energy and participatory theatre. Co-Founding Khaki Creative taught me that co-design and co-creation is one of the keys to successful collaboration. And that designing a conversation around who you are, what you do for whom, and why it matters takes a tremendous amount of effort and intention to do well. ALSO, that conversation is an ever-evolving one. Show less

❓ Guiding Question: How to do we disrupt the usual travel paradigm and develop a more sustainable one? How do we plan serendipity? I don't feel the same way about staying in a hotel after working at the Linden Centre. We gave so many of our guests the type of personal experience you usually only get when visiting a good friend. And I haven't found anything in my travels since. Perhaps the best way to describe the LC (in my words) are a series of historical sites restored and repurposed into hotels with soul. These courtyard compounds and homes were built around communities who invite guests to experience a unique flavor of cultural tourism. ⭐ During my time at the Centre, we developed the ‘Travel Curating’ team to scale the kind of personalized experience that rated the Centre as the #1 hotel on TripAdvisor in China at the time. ⭐ I trained, supported, and mentored 35 of my teammates around guest experience, storytelling, program design, sales, and feedback so that guests wanted to return + couldn't help but tell their friends about their visit. ⭐ Our TC team designed + facilitated ~20 immersive educational programs for high school to graduate students including American School of Dubai, Duke, Shanghai American School, Middlebury, Sidwell Friends, Stanford, Virginia Tech. ⭐ We served as a channel for feedback between all LC departments, listening to ~30 colleagues challenges + concerns in order to manage and mitigate conflicts and keep the business running smoothly. ⭐ And we developed a guest-in-residence event series where we hosted ~40 researchers, practitioners, and facilitators working on interesting projects to share their experience, wisdom, and expertise with others staying at the Centre. I also served as a daily Ambassador, representation for, and extension of the Founders when meeting, guiding, and entertaining high profile visitors and guests from companies, orgs, media, government. ❓ Guiding Question: How to transition from an entrepreneurial non-profit education start-up to an organization with meaningful, lasting impact across China? I joined Teach For China (TFC) in the moment it was transitioning from the China Education Initiative (CEI) to TFC. It was in the process of joining the global Teach For All community and was working to further scale it's impact across China. CEI was one of the Khaki Creative clients that inspired me to spend more time working in the social enterprise space and when I joined CEI/TFC as Director of Communications I was excited to wear a number of hats and work across a range of projects under the communication umbrella. TFC had a very unique model at the time, pairing 2 Chinese and 2 American teachers with schools in rural Yunnan Province in need of teaching resource. The bulk of my work focused on internal and external communications, learning and collecting feedback from teaching fellows, as well as the website development process. Show less
