The objective of our project was to predict delirium in ICU patients. The Kingston General Hospital provided our team with time series physiological data including patients’ heart rate, mean arterial pressure, BtO2, and SpO2. Using a convolutional neural network, we classified whether the patient would undergo delirium at any point during their stay in the ICU. Our hypothesis was that there is a fundamental physiological reason for why a patient is at risk of delirium. Our project pipeline generated Grammian Angular Summation/Difference fields and markov transition fields which were used by our convolutional neural network in the same way as an image. Using an imaging approach allowed us to leverage the benefits of convolutional neural networks to achieve a higher classification accuracy with reduced overfitting. At time of writing, our model achieved 80% cross validation accuracy which exceeds the average accuracy of a physician (72%). We are currently in the process of writing a research paper which we hope helps to inform the future automation of delirium detection.

His research findings have significant implications for asphalt materials-based industries, and the potential to be utilized on an international scale. At 19 years old, this experience developed numerous areas of Max’s professional skillset. Through exposure to a Spanish-operating laboratory, Max became advanced in spoken Spanish for professional environments. Working alongside researchers with doctorates in chemistry and civil engineering, Max was expected to manage steep learning curves to collaborate effectively with colleagues. These high standard conditions pushed Max to excel in productivity and quality of work. Max’s research was focused on the aging-related properties of asphalt, with a goal of determining correlation between organic fractional components, thermodynamic properties, and the transition temperature at which elastic property begins to exceed viscous property, commonly known as gel point. Max conducted infrared spectroscopy, modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC), and dynamic shear rheological analyses to determine the effect of cooling on gel point temperature. Max’s findings, primarily relevant to the road construction industry, indicate that the time asphalt spends in isothermal state prior to quality-testing can significantly vary the apparent quality of the material. This information can be used to avoid the implementation and eventual cracking of poor-quality asphalt in roads, airport pavements, or other bitumen-based products. Show less
