I was selected by Dr. Robinson at the Hormel Institute as the only rising junior to participate in their SURE internship program. My specific project focused on histone mutations as a marker for tumorigenesis in diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma using mice models. My work was presented at a poster presentation put on by the Hormel Institute. We found that the loss of methylation at a particular histone site was a causal marker for this type of pediatric glioma. It is my hope that the lessons learned from both the successes and failures in doing my research will inform my drive and work as a future physician. -Assess pediatric high-grade glioma tumorigenesis in both cultured human and mice cell lines -Carry out bacterial transformation, amplification, restriction enzyme digest, transfection, and transduction into target human and mice cells -Manage mice glioma histology including brain sectioning, tissue processing, tissue embedding, and IHC staining -Performing Western Blot analysis for knockout confirmations -Assorted tasks including protein/DNA quantification, basic cell culturing, chemiluminescence imaging, and mouse genotyping Show less

I began employment during the first major outbreak of COVID-19 as a second and third shift worker. After about a month of working, COVID-19 came to the facility resulting in a complete lockdown and extreme safety precautions for all workers. I had previously been a float CNA but because of these lockdowns, I was reassigned to the COVID isolation unit. Oftentimes, a lot of my day would be just sitting with residents as I was one of the only people they saw for weeks at a time. I can clearly remember going home every day not knowing how many of my residents were going to make it through the night and mourning each loss with deep pain in my heart. These experiences I will remember forever. -Foster activities of daily living by assisting with serving meals, feeding patients as necessary, ambulation, hygiene practices, repositioning, and providing access to in-house activities -Provide patient comfort by utilizing resources and materials; transporting patients; answering patients’ call lights and requests; and reporting observations of the patient to the nursing supervisor -Protect patients by keeping patient information confidential Show less

At St. Luke’s Hospital, I worked to create a calm yet efficient environment for patients. One of my primary responsibilities was to serve as a constant channel of communication informing them about wait times and answering any non-medical questions they had. When patients come to the ED, patients and their families are often in highly emotional states and so I helped to create an inviting space by holding conversations or giving them a warm blanket. Through this, I recognized it was these little things that can make all the difference to someone. Helping people when they are in such conditions has not only helped me become more compassionate but also has peaked my will to serve. After a few months of doing this work, I was promoted to being a trainer of other ED volunteers. At the time, I was the only high schooler allowed in this position but once I became a trainer, I was responsible for training all of the new high school volunteers. During my time at St. Luke’s, I trained over 15 high school and college volunteers. I was recognized in this role through several volunteer-of-the-months by staff and administrators alike as well as personal notes from patients and staff. -Serve as a constant channel of communication between patients and hospital staff about wait times and any non-medical questions -Help to streamline the check-in and triage process by taking patient information -Create and manage an inviting waiting room offering refreshments, conversation, and warm blankets to patients -Coordinating with family members on the status of patients checked into the ED -Training all other high school and college volunteers in the ED triage position Show less
