Dec 2021 - Feb 2022
After passing my New York State-EMT exam, I worked as a rookie EMT at SeniorCare starting in December and ending at the end of February, which was during the first omicron wave. Due to the commute time to the Bronx and back, and my full-time commitment to Mo' Motion, I was unable to sustain part-time hours during my Sunday and Monday night shifts. Being an EMT was the best, hardest job I've ever had in my life, and it's something I can return. I did it to help health care workers with the intention of volunteering in an EMT capacity. I found out too late that it is hard to get an EMT volunteer spot in Manhattan due to liability issues and omnipresent hazards. My instructors advised that I work for a private company to apply what I'd learned after completing a two-month accelerated course in July-August 2020. I was the only person in my class and on duty who had intended on working in a volunteer capacity with medicine not being one of my core skill sets unlike my partners: full-time EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, pre-med students, nurses or any of the above in training. I loved everything about my experience as an EMT except the fact that I could not sustain it. The starting pay was also $17.50/hour with the highest industry pay being $25/hour (for EMT-B), but one would have to work at least six months to be 911 and have significant advanced life saving experience to receive the highest pay as an EMT short of paramedic and management roles. Senior Care is extremely well run, and I am fortunate to have had many heroic front liners as my mentors, leaders and partners. My mother was a nurse for 31 years. She worked every floor of the hospital, and in the local college infirmary, as a grade school nurse sub, in the local BOCES program, and in her most beloved and meaningful position as a hospice nurse. I thought of her always when I went in and out of nursing homes for transports and understood why her job was so meaningful. Show less
