Chi rom e... chi no

Scampia, Naples, Italy
-
Social Worker, Outreach worker, Youth Support Worker, Mediator.

2002 - Present
Chi rom e… chi no Onlus was established in Scampia in 2002/2003, right before what it is recorded to be "one of the bloodiest gang wars in the city's modern history", when the balance of the Camorra's narcotic business was broken and clans were splitting into "friends" or "rivals". Local people were scared, the whole neighborhood would close itself for a couple of years and Scampia was about to fall into a "social oblivion". But there's good in this suburb. As a team team composed of social workers, teachers and lawyers, we assessed the needs of people by going out and meet them, so to implement social interventions with participative approaches as well as building resilence projects with multi-dimensional perspectives. Its cultural/social activities and events are based on the concept of the city as a shared space and its periphery as a truly dynamic environment, where meaningful interrelationship can be developed and enhanced to plan and place anti-discriminatory practices, so to generate self-awareness processes, autocriticism, cultural emancipation and self-determination. Chi rom e… chi no realizes audio-visual reports and creative workshops focused on participatory methodologies, both in the political and the social dimensions and encourages community focused social practices with children, teenagers and adults mainly living in the suburb of Scampia (Naples), underaking the advocacy of the local Roma ethnic minority and enhancing meeting events and social actions to facilitate the integration of both the Italian and the refugee communities (mainly Roma people escaped from ex-Yugoslavia in the 80's and "settled down" in an illegal encampment). The social interventions, in accordance with the human rights principles, always means co-operating with the schools, the local welfare services and the health care services, even though for the first 10 years Chi rom e... chi no would work only on self-funding base (earnings from cultural events and private funding). Chi rom e... chi no Onlus; The Kumpania - Gastronomic Intercultural Journeys ltd.
-
Scampia, Naples, Italy.
-
Community Social Worker, Intercultural Mediator, Project/Support Worker.
-
2012 - 2014
The Kumpania - Gastronomic Intercultural Journeys is an multicultural catering project, After a community work with a group of marginalized Roma families (please see "I Crociati" project below), our team assessed a unique social outcome by observing how much effort a group of women from Scampia (Naples, Italy) would put into informally set up a truly convivial catering, in order to greet and enteirtain all the guests and “visitors” who had arrived from the neighborhood and from all over the main city of Naples during a theatre event. The excellent results were far beyond the expectations, in terms of self-determination, self-entrepreneurship and genuine self-emancipation. Since then, a group of 12 unemployed Roma and Neapolitan women has united to create a small catering business called “The Kumpania – Intercultural Gastronomic Journeys”, which was formally funded in 2013 by the Unicredit Foundation, having won the “Naples 2.0 International Social Innovation Competition” and has constantly moved onto Roma-Italian fusion cuisine experimentation by setting up the very first Roma-Italian Restaurant nationally recognized: Chikù. While the manifesto might seem “cooking and serving food for a living”, the true mission is to create a social economy practice, to maintain an ethical finance project in order to unite rather than divide, to integrate rather than segregate. The Kumpania has been awarded for “Creating an innovative new method for inclusion of the young Roma population”. In August 2012, it was invited to Venice (Italy) to cater and to participate to the one-day event ZUPI–ZUPPA–SOUP held at the Faculty Of Arts & Design of the University IUAV (Venice): the purpose of the event was to create a dialogue around the housing related issues for Roma people within EU. Being the setting convivial and informal, conversations were moderated during the course of a meal prepared by The Kumpania: the women involved in the cookery were then invited at the open discussion. Social reporter, Writer, Communiy social worker.
-
Mar 2008 - Apr 2009
The book "Terre in disordine. Racconti e immagini della Campania di oggi" ("Messy lands. Stories and images of Campania today") edited by Minimum Fax, gathers 5 qualitative social research reported by 5 working groups, each of them composed of 2 social reporters and 1 photographer. Each working group investigates five different areas of Campania (a Region of Southern Italy), focusing on the participatory action-research methodology and writing their own report. The sub-area where my team has been working is called “Litorale Domizio”, which starts at the very North of Napoli and ends at the southern border with the Region of Lazio. That area, Castel Volturno in particular, hosts several African communities who share the place with the locals. Prostitution, racial discrimination, work exploitation and poverty, plus the presence of many criminal organizations makes oppressive and hard the living, leading to a significant social detachment between local people and the land they are living in. The main tasks have been coordination, logistics and planning all the aspects of a social research; data collecting, data analysis and final writing of the report. This research- action experience has attempted to discover and empower the possibilities and the human opportunities of the local communities: a local unemployed youth was actively trained in the social research methodologies. Specialist Support Worker, Facilitator, Project Coordinator.
-
Mar 2008 - Oct 2008
The "I crociati" project is a Community social work developed in Scampia (Naples), whose plan is to bring together theatre actors with a group of marginalized Roma families and enahancing their artistic skills by deeply valuing their culture. The project itself is designed to conclude with a theatrical event with the trained group, to be held in the very illegal encampment where the ethnic group lives. However, the real mission has been the facilitation of communication and cultural understanding between the people involved through the organization of multiple trust/team-building meetings. The unexpected active participation led some of the Roma people to reach some deep accomplishments, such as self-confidence, autocritisism attitudes and true willingness to use the final show as a cathartic pretext to share their open minded integration concept. During the theater workshops the encampment's eldest woman (also known as “the grandma”) would sing of the painful past her people suffered and of the hopeful future ahead. The show (based on “The Birds” of Aristophanes) was an absolute hit: many people from civil society came to whatch it, changing their perspectives about the Roma ethnic minority while getting happily fed in an highly convivial setting catered from a women group. Scampia, Naples, Italy.

Social Worker, Youth Support Worker.
-
Oct 2005 - Jun 2008
"Arrevuoto Scampia-Napoli" is a co-operative theatrical project that has started in 2005 and has involved about 100 young people coming from different parts of Napoli (city center and periphery), aged 8 to 20 years, with extremely different backgrounds and income brackets: working all together with their diversity, prejudices, different skills, and bringing to the public an explosive alchemy. The specific “theatrical dimension” of the project was guided by Marco Martinelli and his Teatre delle Albe di Ravenna with his so called “non-school” methodology, a theatre-educational practice designed to “rub together” adolescents with tradition: “a game consisting in giving new life to the dramaturgic structure of the text” by resuscitating acient texts and enhancing the youth's improvisation. Family support, community support, coordination and pedagogical work have been the main activities of my team's specific social work: to lead children and adolescents at the theatrical workshops constantly has meant working with their families and undertaking their social issues. Scampia is a suburb with high safety risks issues, extensive illegal drug trade, poverty and many others social/cultural related problems as well as a wonderful and creative self-strength. In this extremely challenging situation, the synergy created between civil society, artists, social actors and schools has been so powerful and inspiring that the project, after the mandatory three years schedule, has now become autonomous. Youth support worker, Specialist skills tutor, Social Worker.
-
Oct 2003 - Jun 2007
The After School Program and Family Support Project was established in the Saint Lorence district of the central area of Naples as a creative and proper answer to the marginalized situations of children and teens aged 8 to 16 "at risk of social exclusion", as the 285/97 Italian law warns: dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are the specific problems children suffers. The district is statitically overcrowded and is affected by a constant illegal drug trade right in the street, between the buildings where the locals live. The substantial "space-related" and safety problem affects the relational and emotional needs of the children and teenagers, obstructing their natural processes of social inclusion and integration, as well as their cultural development and emancipation.
