Matt views the design process as a collaborative undertaking between client, designer, engineer and builder. Requiring both creativity and practicality, the designer manifests in three dimensions what was conceived in two. He loves bringing it all together and watching the client enjoy their new space. In 2006, he and Eric Hoffman brought their varied experience in larger firms together to create SUM Design Studio, a collective of architects, interior designers, engineers, landscape designers and space planners. SUM's work has the opportunity to not only meet the client's needs but to enhance the larger community as a whole, as shown by its work on SUM-Thing New Condominiums and Mississippi Studios, both Portland projects.
