      • Jul 2004 - Present

In July of 2004, I embarked on a journey I never dreamed I'd be on. The night before my wedding, I informed my parents that I was planning to leave my current job to start my own company. I "proposed" this idea to my wife on our honeymoon. Luckily, she backed me 100%, and for some years, we lived off her income alone. This decision to become an entrepreneur yielded more personal growth than I ever anticipated. I feel as though I've earned my MBA in all the mistakes I have learned from as a business owner. Now, these many years later, I'm immensely proud of the company my team, and I have built. The firm is now centered around the idea that we should be helping our clients define what they want most out of life and then help them optimize a path to achieving those outcomes. Sure, we gotta nail the investment advice and portfolio management too, but that should be "table stakes." I don't want our team to rest until we help our clients fulfill their aspirations and make the most of the precious time they have on earth. This is why we exist — this is why we do what we do because life is not a rehearsal. Show less

After my years of learning from the JV program to the Boulder program to the Dawson program, I felt ready to take what I had learned about leadership, standards, character, vision, and values and infuse them into a new environment to see if we could turn a program around. We took the reins of this storied program and began to change the culture and direction. It took many years to get it right, but it has been a rewarding journey to remake this team into one of the top programs in Colorado. https://www.fairviewlax.com/ Show less

When my daughters were born, I felt the need to step away from my role as a head coach. To create the necessary separation, I joined the staff at the up-and-coming Dawson School. I learned a lot from head coach Pete Devlin and really enjoyed my time helping this team become one of the state's top programs. Lacrosse growth exploded in Boulder. As a result, the combined high school program was broken out into the four high school programs participating - Boulder, Fairview, Monarch, and Dawson. I took the reins as the head coach at Boulder High School. Let's call this undertaking "Organizational Management 101." I learned quickly how to manage and grow players, set expectations with parents, negotiate with administrators, project plan seasons, sequence instruction, and chart a path toward future growth and success. My growth at Boulder would later become a model for my career. Show less

Admittedly, getting laid off by Sun Microsystems really caused me much distress. I didn't understand how or why they would get rid of the top salesperson. (I would later learn about "last hired, first fired".) Regardless, this event really shook my confidence. However, it also gave me some time to search my soul. My soul searching led me straight back to financial services. This time, though, I struck out on my own and "hung up my own shingle" within the A.G. Edwards structure. Pretty soon, I was engrossed in the A.G. Edwards system. And, talk about training! The team at A.G. Edwards spent so much time teaching us about a new skill: consulting. Suddenly, I went from a person with much theoretical knowledge about financial planning to a person who was actually helping clients create and set up college plans, fund their retirement, and invest their money. I learned so much during my time at A.G. Edwards; however, my compensation was only enough to get me by. It wasn't enough to pay off my student loans or to gather any savings. In addition, I really desired more responsibility. And, tech was booming... So, I left my comfortable job at A.G. Edwards to strike out a new path in sales at Sun Microsystems. Here, I helped colleges and universities implement service programs for their existing enterprise computer systems. I studied networking and HTML coding by night and sold huge contracts by the day. It was quite something, and I discovered that I was really good at coming up with solutions for academic institutions. In 6 months, I earned enough to pay off all my student loans, buy a new car, and accumulate a huge safety net. It was great until the technology boom came to an end, and I found myself in the middle of a layoff. Show less

After my years in Colorado's playground, I moved down to Boulder to "get a real job." A connection of mine that I met on Copper's golf course suggested I contact a broker at then regional brokerage A.G. Edwards. I helped the top team in Boulder with back-office operations and preparations for client interactions. When I was there, I noticed that the team didn't do any financial planning for its clients. So, drawing on my financial planning acumen from AYCO, I began to push for adding integrated planning. This planning service became a crucial part of the client package moving forward. Show less

      • Feb 2000 - May 2000

Around the same time that I started at Sun Microsystems, I began my high school lacrosse coaching career. Lacrosse was beginning its surge in popularity, and so the program was a combined program from all the local high schools. The head varsity coach hired me to run the JV team. I jumped right into the fire here. Honestly, I had never coached before, so I relied on the coaching experiences I had as a player to guide me. Looking back, I could have done many things differently. I guess I at least modeled the right stuff for my players, even though I was not much older than them... Show less

Powder, powder, and more powder! After college, I moved to Colorado to pursue my passion for competing in snowboarding. To pay for my lifestyle, I survived by serving in several management roles at Copper Mountain (Intrawest). I oversaw multiple lift operations as a lift foreman in the winters, and I managed the private lesson booking desk and the entire lesson booking staff. In the summers, I kept the golfers moving along as a ranger on Copper's golf course, Copper Creek and taught newcomers how to fly fish. Essentially, I felt like I was "retired." Show less

I worked for Ayco during the summers and winters of my final two years at Fairfield. During my time here, I helped the Senior Editor write and update the company's Money-in-Motion books and other public relations documents. I also wrote articles for the company's internal newsletter. They offered me a job right out of high school and, while I was very appreciative, the mountains of Colorado were calling my heart.
