This role was a placement I carried out part-time alongside my final year studies at University. I was assisting a Human Geography Lecturer in his research on the different ethnic communities in Scotland. The role was heavily focused on data management and analysis, and the use of Arc GIS.Data management tasks:- Source and download demographic data from the 2001 and 2011 Scottish Census- Identify key information to extract and build new databases with on Microsoft Excel- Data manipulation to produce proportional figures in relation to their Output AreasGIS:- Source and download base maps to produce maps upon- Integrate data from the databases I created into ArcMap- Produce visual representations of the data to highlight key areas and figures in different forms e.g. chloropleth maps and proportional symbol mapping- Created world maps indicating the origins of interview participantsThroughout the placement I strongly developed my time management and organisational skills as I had to balance my time between this role, studying and working part-time. I also enhanced my GIS skills and which provided me with much more confidence when using the software. I was able to build on my data management and analysis skills and also improve my ability to communicate technical terms to others with less understanding of them.
