I managed incoming media enquiries and developed means to deliver engaging content, aligned with the University’s core strategic aims. I led on the #BreaktheChain campaign, which culminated in a major stunt in central London involving a custom-built ‘human vending machine’ to raise awareness of contemporary slavery, and the launch of the University’s corporate partnership with Team GB. I delivered PR activity for major campaigns, including the British Science Festival. In addition, I advised senior managers on the University’s response to a number of corporate communication and crisis communication scenarios. Show less

Working closely with senior managers and the Trust’s Board, I advise on media and communications strategies to manage media scrutiny, generate positive coverage and support the organisation’s staff and public audiences through periods of change. I have secured a number of high profile pieces of media coverage, notably working with senior managers, clinicians and the Ministry of Justice to allow a film crew into our secure hospital for the first time in its 20-year history, arranging permission to film patients who are being detained. I also worked with the Guardian and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to produce a film about the Trust’s pioneering Strokestra project. I carried out an audit of internal communication channels and made recommendations to the Trust’s Board to make improvements. This included the introduction of a range of new tools and methods for cascading corporate news through the organisation, the introduction of video as a communication tool and the redesign of the Trust’s newsletters. This audit also formed the basis of the Trust’s communication strategy. Show less

    • Communications Officer
      • Feb 2010 - Oct 2015

As Communication Officer, I was responsible for ensuring that the large workforce of Humberside Fire and Rescue Service was kept informed about important news and developments throughout the organisation. This has been especially challenging during times of great change and budgetary constraints in the public sector. The work that I delivered helped staff in the organisation to understand the need for change, feel secure in the process and ensured that they actively engaged in consultation and engagement activity to shape the future of the Service. During my time with the Service I developed a range of communication channels which have been embedded across the organisation and are highly valued by staff. I have also written organisational policies and plans to ensure the consistent delivery of communication to a high standard. I kept abreast of new technology as it developed, implementing its use where appropriate, in order to continually improve internal communication. Part of my role involved carrying out press officer duties working to secure positive coverage of the Service's initiatives and safety messages and to highlight the work of operational crews. I deal with complex media enquiries requiring a strategic response on a daily basis. Part of this role included providing out of hours cover. I also developed the Service's social media presence on networks including Facebook and Twitter into thriving platforms that the public and other stakeholders continue to engage with. They particularly proved their worth during the 2012 flooding in Hull when these tools were used as the Service's primary warning and informing mechanisms.. Show less
