There are 100 billion neurons in the human brain communicating through trillions of synapses. How do our genes determine how this exquisitely complicated network wires-up into circuits that are critical for our survival and experience as humans? My research in Megan Williams's lab is discovering fundamental rules that determine how neurons selectively decide to communicate with other neurons. Our findings help us understand how healthy brains develop and how genetic changes lead to developmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability.
