The UCSC-FERP is a 16-ha mapped forest plot in Mediterranean-climate, mixed-evergreen coastal forest in the Santa Cruz mountains, along the Central Coast of California. Located on the Campus Natural Reserve of the University of California Santa Cruz campus, it is home to a multitude of woody trees, shrubs, and vines. Research on the FERP is a part of the Smithsonian Forest-GEO network, and follows their standardized protocols. This includes monitoring the growth, mortality, and recruitment of more than 40,000 tagged stems from 34 different plant species. The FERP also has a network of litter traps and associated habitat boards in order to provide long-term monitoring of tree flowering/fruiting, as well as the dynamics of native reptiles and amphibians. All data collected on the FERP is retrieved and managed by students and interns. Providing exceptional opportunities to learn about the natural history of the reserve, and practice field-based ecological research. I began working on the FERP as an intern, being recruited almost immediately after I ended my previous internship with the California Native Plant Society (CNPS). As an intern on the FERP I was able to take what I had learned from working with CNPS, and develop into a very proficient field researcher. It was during this time that I also found a strong passion for forest ecology. After my internship was over, I was recommended by my crew leader to become one myself. I graciously accepted this offer, and I use this new position to further develop my leadership capabilities, managing my crew both in the field, and in the lab. While being in charge of my peers is difficult work, and field work can be incredibly exhausting, I am forever grateful to be able to work in an environment that I thoroughly enjoy. Show less
