Along with Lois Jean Brady, I am studying the effects of video-assisted speech technology: a system that incorporates video modeling within the context of virtual reality to teach motor speech skills and language development in children with autism. In the study, we are creating a headset that integrates bone-conduction sound systems with virtual reality software displayed for the subjects through a smartphone. We are using highly realistic modeled mouths which will provide a 3D visual stimulus, aimed to increase imitation, improve articulation, and expand the mean length of utterance in the study's subjects. We designed an advanced machine-learning speech and language evaluation, which used speech diarization technology, IPSYN level analysis, and social function evaluation. The goal of the system was to help differentiate language differences from language disorders, helping to reduce the over-identification of diverse populations of children in special education.
