Recruited to lead the efforts of one of ten national centers answering the needs of individuals in crisis using an online chat-based medium. Funded by a federal grant from a partnership between the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL), Crisis Chat provided crisis management and suicide prevention counseling skills online. During our first year, we assisted over 1,500 individuals through crisis situations and coordinated interstate active rescue with local law enforcement and emergency medical personnel for over 50 persons at imminent risk for suicide. Created and implemented a detailed and intensive training program that developed stronger volunteer skills in a shorter period than standard training. Developed and maintained a partnership with the College of Charleston’s Peer Counseling Center, improving their training, and broadening their skill set, particularly concerning crisis management and suicide prevention.
