Staff Writer for sports section
-
Feb 2010 - May 2019
• I was promoted to the Daily Press because of my performance at our sister paper, the Desert Dispatch. The Daily Press sports editor took notice of my work and offered me an open position. • I covered sports across the Victor Valley with print and digital content ranging from written stories to Facebook Live sessions to photos and video. • I stepped up to take on new leadership duties after layoffs in 2017. From that time on, I planned out sports section daily from local coverage to wire stories and collaborated with the photo editor to arrange visual coverage. • I was always focused on pushing our product forward both in print and online. I pioneered new content for the sports section. I created a weekly feature page called "In the Dirt," which focused on prep sports and represented a new way to tell stories for the Daily Press. I was told by one long-time reader that it was "the coolest thing" he'd seen in the paper in years. I also started a blog and podcast for the section. • Grew staff social media accounts from single-digit follower counts to thousands. Used social media both as a tool to share content and connect with our readers and sources. Made myself available for conversation, questions and criticisms on my professional Twitter account. • Planned and contributed to a yearly 50-page prep football preview section. I was selected several times to write the cover story for the preview section. • Launched a year-end sports banquet starting in 2017. Served as a speaker at the event and interviewed NFL Hall-of-Famers Marcus Allen and Ronnie Lott on stage in front of a 400-person audience. • Designed pages daily until 2015. Coordinated layout with an offsite design house after 2015. • It is important for me to also help others in their careers. That’s what led me to oversee our internship program and help mentor young sports reporters. Show less

• Covered two high schools, a community college and local youth sports to produce game, news and feature stories, columns, photos, videos and blog entries. Mined the beat for unique content like a story about the high school football coach who made a deal with cafeteria workers to get his players left over burgers or a story about a highly successful cross country coach’s secret tricks of the trade. • Planned and designed daily three-page sports section. Worked to make a full package, presenting information in layers from copy to photos to design. • Led a redesign of the paper. Added new ongoing content features to the section. One reader called our results a “breath of fresh air.” • Managed a staff of one and several freelancers. Show less
