Independent Study: Searched scholarly school databases using key words for the Syrian and Iraqi refugee crisis (articles included UN reports, university studies in psychology and linguistics, and sociological reports), personally funded trip to Sweden which has the second highest population of refugees from Syria and Iraq in Europe and to work hands on with Arabs, interviewed Syrian and Iraqi refugees about their perspective on the barriers to becoming a part of a Western society by asking them a series of questions which they answered verbally and in writing. Transcribed their written answers in Arabic, translated using my own knowledge of Arabic along with verifying the translation with native speakers and professors, and analyzed the data which produced a 139 page document that allowed a suffering people to voice their perspectives in their own words, and it aimed to enable Westerners (law makers, ESL teachers, and people who might have refugees as neighbors) to be better informed about the refugee crisis so they can build lasting relationships with this people group. Course Project and Presentation: Gathered, analyzed, and translated many Arabic media news website (both independent and state run) articles and videos on the bombing of a Coptic Church in Cairo on December 11, 2016. This was done to identify key struggles in the Middle East along with the media’s and government’s underlying biases and ideologies throughout the region. The project was completed by searching for and identifying key Arabic words, phrases, and expressions in the most popular Arabic news websites, counting the number of times words were used, deducing why media outlets used particular photos and videos, and whether those videos matched the content. The project also examined how this event was used to advance political agendas, parties, and international relations within the region. Show less
