I had been mentoring Matt for a few months on Information Architecture in the area of mobile design. Matt proactively asked if he could help with anything I was doing at work. I let him know i could use some help with prototyping. At Magic, we needed a fully interactive, bluetooth connected music app, that would allow users to "read" music, and play the guitar, even if they hadn't ever played a guitar or read music. I was using Invision, and due to its limitations, Matt suggested trying Flinto. He came in to the office twice a week over a 2 month period, and helped create and hone the experience into one we could test. The work we did basically changed the overall experience. We observed in live usability testing that those playing the guitar were looking at their hands back and forth to the screen. We changed the way the chords were displayed, put the new chord symbols into the Flinto prototype, then tested again. The outcome was positive in several ways; users stopped looking at their hands, and were able to focus on the screen, basically sight-reading the chords, also allowing users to sing the lyrics that were now aligned with the proper chords. These changes to the UI elevated the user experience to new heights for everyone who played the guitar while using the app. I can't thank Matt enough for his dedication, thoughtfulness, and applying his excellent UX knowledge and skills to help us with our challenge.
