I was responsible for the health, safety and welfare of the 750 staff who deliver World leading air traffic control systems and management, including the infrastructure (engineering & maintenance) and service operations throughout New Zealand and across the globe. "With the pending legislative changes in New Zealand the opportunity to have helped bring Airways into the new 'Model' era was incredibly exciting". During my year as National Health and Safety Manager at Airways; - The health and safety committee was restructured to reflect the latest regulations, - Contractor management was realigned to meet good practice, - Incident investigation methodology was amended to reflect the Incident Causation Analysis Model, - Electronic reporting was refreshed to become automated and aligned with the new Act, - Tertiary status with ACC WSMP was retained, - We undertook the pilot Safety Star Rating Scheme achieving a very good outcome, - The Health and Safety Advisor that reported to me was shortlisted for Health and Safety practitioner of the year 2016 at the Safeguard National Health and Safety Awards, & - I was invited to and spoke at the Mental Wellbeing Conference 2016 on the Airways Fatigue Management System. Taking on the challenge of rebuilding Christchurch City. B&D Construction Limited was in the thick of residential earthquake repairs contracted by both Fletcher's EQR and Hawkins. During the nine months I was with the team we achieved secondary with ACC WSMP on the first attempt, was one of the first SMEs to sign the Canterbury Rebuild Charter, maintained a green rating with online pre-qualification scheme AppCon (SiteWise) and was shortlisted for the Safeguard National Health and Safety Awards for the SME Initiative Category in 2012. It was during this time that I also gained my Certificate in Construction Site Safety with SiteSafe. I found the transition from Union Organiser to Health and Safety Advisor simple thanks largely to the similarities of both professions. I was privileged enough to have worked for 1000's of union members from the fast food, hotel, retail, call centres and language school industries. I was responsible for servicing the lower half of the North Island and Marlborough and later replaced Wellington with the entire South Island for two and a half years. During my time with Unite I; - Organised public events, - Wrote and led media campaigns, - Developed and hosted in-house training for members, delegates and local community groups, - Met, trained and encouraged individuals to become members of the Unite Executive and they continue to still hold senior positions within the union, - Oversaw the redundancy process of numerous workplaces after the Canterbury earthquakes, - Provided emergency packages and support to members and their families during the immediate days after the February events, - Attended and supported members through dozens of mediation facilitated meetings, investigations and disciplinary meetings, - Significantly grew the membership bases of both the lower half of the North Island and South Island.
