Matt and I worked together on two analytical articles looking at Drivers of Recent UK Consumer Price Inflation and Discretionary vs Non-Discretionary Inflation. Matt was a great help to the team, working at pace and showing strong analytical skills, completing all work to the highest of standards. He helped and supported other members of the team with their work to ensure our publication was progressing quickly, while also quality assuring work to ensure figures were accurate and correct. It was a pleasure to work with Matt and I would recommend him as a great colleague to work with.

Matt is a thoughtful and motivated economics student who has excelled on the most challenging parts of the undergraduate programme. He is a flexible thinker and already has direct experience in economic policymaking. Whether he continues to work in the public sector or pursues further education in economics, I predict (and wish him) every success.

Economist in Business Case team. Constructing Appraisals and Modelling proposals for new transformative rail connections from Oxford to Cambridge. My main role involves incorporating micro and macroeconomic thinking to build the case for the new rail line, including; demand modelling, assessing net societal welfare gains/losses and forecasting the growth of housing and jobs. I work using the guidance from the Government Green Book and Transport Appraisal Guide to ratify these approaches in creating a robust case for the project. My econometric knowledge enables me to hold robustly models (used to estimate the above impacts) to account. An example of the typical question I’m tasked with resolving would be; what is the impact on the Operating costs, Total costs, and overall Benefits Costs Ratio of the project as a result of running 4 trains per hour instead of two across the scheme? Product owner and Analysis lead for development of new Property Rental statistics. I chiefly am involved with ratifying the methodology to an organisational-standard and managing the demands of the project with stakeholders. These will provide a more granular insight into the property and rental market.I continue to develop beyond my role in the following; • High-level applied data analysis and mining in Python and PySpark. • Applied economic theory in ADS project data analysis, including; identifying homogeneous products and exploiting variables in data to create a proxy for consumer expenditure.• Providing internal briefs to senior colleagues on the State of the Economy to provide context around our statistics.• Presenting and involvement with senior economists and civil servants across Government (notably OBR, HMT, BoE).• Gained econometric and advanced time-series analyses experience in a project with the Alan Turing institute to produce timely fore/nowcasts of key economic indicators - involving application of dynamic factor models and differential equations.• Demonstrated both transactional & co-operative leadership qualities in creation of; o Analytical team: aimed to both upskill staff and efficiently complete surplus tasks across the division. o ‘New Starter Network’: to champion the inclusive and wellbeing objectives of ONS – particular vital for those starting from home. I returned to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in the Prices Division – responsible for research and production of inflation statistics. My main role has been developing code for multiple project aspects in implementing Alternative Data Sources (ADS) in the production of consumer inflation statistics – a key development in ONS’ “radical” strategy for better statistics that will have a significant wider impact. I have also contributed to Quarterly Economic Analyses’ of inflation statistics in the context of the wider economy. • High-level applied data analysis and mining in Python and PySpark. Worked at the Office for National Statistics for a year-long placement. This was a full-time role, assuming the actions of an assistant economist. During my time, I enhanced numerous skills, notably in; leadership, analysis and collaboration which are elaborated on below. Having passed the Economic Assessment Centre, as one of the fortunate few to do so, I will be returning as an Assistant Economist in September 2020. Leadership: - I co-ran an Economic Central Analytical Team - which conducted analysis projects. Some successful projects include 'the decoupling of of economic growth from carbon emissions' - the link available. - I also conducted a weekly STATA data analysis course for fellow placement students and economists at the ONS in order to conduct more complex analysis. Analysis: - I enhanced coding, data analysis, economic interpretability and professional writing skills in producing articles and analysis for my team and other divisions. These projects include: an Analysis of job mobility in the UK; research support in measuring "intangibles" not captured in GDP; the most extensive historical analysis of Blue Book revisions as part of an ongoing ESCoE project; and creating a python code for environmental firm data to flag renewable investments. The links to the first three of these projects are available in my 'Featured' Tab. Collaboration: - As briefly inferred, I collaborated with permanent staff and fellow placement students of all levels and experience in numerous projects at the ONS. In addition, I was also fortunate enough to attend events, such as the RAS (Research, Analysis and Statistics) conference, in which I presented my team's 'Analysis of job changers and stayers'; and the RES (Royal Economic Society) conference at Warwick University - which involved insightful networking with a platitude of esteemed economists. Part of the University Working Group project, my team and myself were tasked with testing the validity of the gravity model in relation to international trade patterns. This project was a fantastic learning curve for me as I communicated with my team in order to gain a greater understanding of methods of statistical analysis. This experience concluded with a final presentation of our successful findings and a mock group employability exercise for the graduate scheme at the Office of National Statistics. Show less

I began from a young age coaching at my local tennis club as a volunteer. I later managed to develop this into a part time job as a tennis coach in Nov 2012. After years of coaching and learning, I eventually reached the status of a Level 2 LTA qualified Tennis Coach. This role taught me valuable communicative and leadership skills as I gained a large responsibility in liaising with clients and distributing other tennis coaches effectively. Coaching as part of a team was also a rewarding and enjoyable aspect. Show less

Partook in work experience for a week at Limpsfield Lawn Tennis club. I was responsible for organising the company's invoices and partaking in some basic accounting work. I found this useful for gaining an understanding of the financial aspect of running a business.
