Broadly, my research focuses on understanding the genetics underlying photosynthesis in marine phytoplankton group diatoms. Specifically, I am involved in two major projects. First, I am studying the genes involved in the production and function of the diatom carbon concentrating mechanism. This structure facilitates photosynthesis by elevating the concentration of CO2 in the immediate proximity of the carbon-fixing enzyme Rubisco. Secondly, I am attempting to engineer new strains of fast growing diatom strains for use in sequestration of CO2 from power plants and production of useful bioproducts. Show less

My postdoctoral research encompasses two major projects. 1) Studying the effects of a novel bacterial-derived compound on the growth of Agrobacterium. 2) Determining the genetic/molecular mechanisms responsible for the inducement of leafy gall in plants by the pathogenic bacteria Rhodococcus.
