    • N.E.S.T Schools Project Worker
      • Mar 2023 - Present

I work for a student-led organisation called North-East Solidarity and Teaching (or N.E.S.T) that supports refugees and asylum seekers in Newcastle upon Tyne. As N.E.S.T's Schools Project Worker, I am responsible for the ongoing delivery and development of the schools project. This involves recruiting and training volunteers, designing and delivering sessions in schools, and working directly with education professionals to ensure the effective running, expansion and monitoring of the project. We currently run reading comprehension activities, phonics classes, and lunch-time/after-school clubs in nine schools. I work collaboratively with colleagues in Newcastle University Students’ Union (NUSU) and Newcastle University, as well as external organisations including Newcastle City Council to carry out the project. I was offered this role after volunteering and interning with N.E.S.T for 18 months. Show less

    • N.E.S.T Schools Project Intern
      • Jan 2023 - Mar 2023

After one year of volunteering in local schools, I successfully applied for an internship with NEST to continue my work in a paid capacity. In this role, I plan and deliver a programme of learning sessions for refugee and asylum seeker children in local skills, working to improve their reading and writing skills and confidence. I conduct qualitative and quantitative research to track the progress of learners’ development. I train and support student volunteers to assist in the delivery of sessions. Show less

I worked part-time as an intern for the ENACT web app team in the linguistics department at Newcastle University. I oversaw running their social media accounts, which involved creating and submitting weekly plans for 100+ posts across Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and TikTok. I also organised dissemination activities in partnership with North East Solidarity and Teaching, in which I ran after school sessions based on the web app's activities for students from forced migration backgrounds. I also assisted in organising a multiplier event, which took place in July to promote the app and share the results with linguists from across the country. Show less
