As a PhD student at the LMC, I had the opportunity to develop a new cementitious binder within a collaborative project with University of Santa Clara, Cuba, funded by the FNS. We have shown that replacement of cement by combined addition of high amounts of calcined clays and limestone bring a synergetic reaction due to the carboaluminates hydrate formation and delivers good strength results. It has also been demonstrated that its very refined and tortuous porosity gives outstanding durability to this binder. This opens the possibility to extend the cement replacement rate (up to 50%), lower the carbon footprint impact of construction materials and enhances the attractivity of calcined clays as Supplementary Cementitious Materials. The project has raised the interest of the Cuban cement industry and an industrial trial has been carried out during 2013. In addition, the new "Low Carbon Cement" project could be started, with the aim of applying this novel technology to India, where the consequences in term of CO2 reduction can be significant taking in account the hugh raising cement production.
