Built Our Own Home

  My mom purchased a bare lot, got her “owner-builder” authorization and we built our own home on Bowen Island. Except for jobs that required specific professionals, we did all the work. Carpentry, concrete, roofing, electrical—you name it, we did it. This experience taught me countless skills, but the most important thing that came from it was my character. Building a house with your family is not an easy task. There were many stressful moments, and things rarely went as planned. The insane situations we endured taught me determination, perseverance, how to deal with stress, and many character traits that make me who I am today. Show less



Destiny Yachts

  I joined the crew of a run-down 95-foot yacht in San Diego. Our job was to repair the vessel and sail it to Vancouver. The engines were seized, the electrical systems were worn out, and the whole boat needed a deep clean. Although the task seemed daunting to the 14-year-old me, I flew out by myself and took the job. Despite being the youngest crew member, I was one of the hardest workers. I did whatever it took to complete a task, from crawling into the dirty bilge to fix a pump, to climbing to the roof to fix the satellites. My outgoing personality made the crew see me as a leader. My leadership led to me receiving important tasks, including rewiring the high-voltage lighting system, replacing electronics, building fiberglass benches and even driving the ship. From this experience, I learned that being a leader does not necessarily mean you are the boss. A leader is someone who leads by example. Show less
