The NASA-supported research was aimed at examining the effect of convection on dendritic morphology and chemical inhomogeneity (macrosegregation) during Crystallization/solidification of alloys. • Designed and implemented crystallization/solidification set-up—including RF furnace, vacuum chamber, oil diffusion pump, stepper motor, temperature control systems etc.—to achieve desired processing conditions. • Developed Chemical-Mechanical Polishing (CMP) methods considering the abrasive material and size, polishing pad properties, force applied to the surface, and polishing time to reveal, investigate, and study the microstructure of materials. • Employed combination of Vibratory Polishers and Ultrasonic Bath for post-CMP cleaning. • Established microscopy and crystallographic methods to record and investigate the microstructures. • Developed image processing techniques to analyze the chemical and morphological properties of materials microstructures. • Characterized samples grown aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in a joint project of NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) to study the absence of gravity-induced-convection on crystals morphology and on chemical inhomogeneity. • Numerically and experimentally investigated the effects of processing conditions on different types of convection, chemical inhomogeneity, and microstructural morphology of alloys. • Led weekly laboratory and/or problem-solving and discussion sessions for groups of 5-10 researchers. • Studied the dynamic system of HIV phase-I and proposed a discrete control scenario, based on Globally Linearizing Control framework, to suppress it. • Developed statistical models of a chemical plant’s unit operations, simulated and optimized them. • Modeled a nonlinear CSRT reactor by neural networks and designed a fuzzy-based controller for it. • Designed a nonlinear adaptive controller for coal-fired utility boiler-turbine unit. • Calculated and investigated convective heat transfer for power-law fluids in packed and fluidized bed of spheres. • Designed an optimal control scenario for a chain of different types of chemical reactors based on operational limitations and economic considerations.
