I first met Maria at German language course based in Zurich, Switzerland in 2007/8. My first impression was of someone who was full of energy and innovation, and very capable of interacting with a whole range of different people/cultures. The basic nature of the course meant that there were a wide spread of people attending, from senior business managers to individuals, simply wanting to learn German. Maria was an extremely popular member of the course, and always willing to aid an assist the weaker members of the course. As a natural Spanish speaker, with strong English skills, Maria demonstrated a flair for learning languages, which she was able to transpose into helping others. I became aware that Maria was also attending University in Barcelona, studying Business and Marketing. At that time, although the Aviation based business I was joint owner of was exhibiting strong growth in our market segment, we were beginning to encounter some problems in breaking through into Spanish speaking markets, especially in South America. I asked Maria if she would be willing to assist us, especially as this was going to involve engineering a Spanish based marketing programme. Of course, Maria was very willing to do this, as essentially it involved her using her newly acquired marketing and business skills in alliance with her natural Spanish and personal skills. We began to develop a business plan, and started to look at obtaining the necessary permits for working and living in Switzerland. Maria attended interviews with our head of HR and office manager, who was delighted with the prospect of employing Maria in the role of Head of MArketing and Social Media.. Unfortunately, due to the slow nature of acheiving the necessary permits, we had not got these sorted before the financial crisis really bit. It became apparent that with the retraction in the aviation market we could no longer justify the business plan, and thus, with great disappointment, we could not proceed with the engagement of Maria at that time. After this, I remained in close contact with Maria, who has helped me with several interim projects on an ad-hoc basis, providing very valuable media and marketing insights, including the development of an ad-hoc flight crew leasing web tool. I would like to recommend ANY employer to offer Maria an opportunity, as they would be absolutely delighted with what they get. As Maria grows in her field, I expect to go a very long way. She has both the natural talent and flair for marketing, the personality that is required to 'make the difference', but also importantly she has demonstrated a business acumen that many of her peers lack. Allied with her optimisitc view, a tenacity to see the hard times through and already a demonstrated willingness to relocate to anywhere in the world, this young lady is definitely upwardly mobile!!! If or when I get the opportunity, I would certainly offer Maria a job!
