  I worked hands-on with patients to run research clinics, checking their vitals and eye pressure at each visit. I prepared them to receive injections from the doctor, and for some studies, I drew blood and collected urine samples and prepared them for lab tests. I collected the patients' detailed medical history and worked through any other paperwork required by the study, and then prepared all of the patient results for the research company to collect. For some studies (unmasked), I prepared the study drug for injection, whether it was the actual drug or a placebo, and for others (masked) I prepared the patient for their injections. Outside of research, I was cross-trained to work in the ophthalmology clinic, where I did complete patient work-ups which included visual acuity, eye and blood pressures, updated medical histories and injection prep. VOLUNTEER OPTOMETRIC SERVICES TO HUMANITY

  I traveled to Meoqui, Chihuahua, Mexico with VOSH, conducting many different tests on the people in and around the town in a pop-up clinic. The patients would start with visual acuity test, and then move through to have student doctors do full exams to check for any disease activity. The patients were then sent to my station where I did an auto-refraction to prepare them for a full refraction. If they needed glasses, we fit them for a pair and then re-tested visual acuity to ensure that the glasses improved their vision. For the last day, a doctor from my clinic came down and I assisted him in performing PRP laser procedures on patients who were in need. Throughout the whole week, we saw about 2,500 people, and on the final day, about 200 people had in depth retina examinations, with about 20 of them receiving laser procedures. Show less
