In my past 31 years of employment at the Center for Disabilities I have taken on many roles and responsibilities. First and foremost I have been a special education teacher to young children. This involves working with infants and children through age 5. I have worked in self-contained special education classrooms with multiply disabled children, children on the spectrum, autistic children, and children with social emotional and language concerns. I have worked in urban, suburban, and rural settings providing consultation services in the classroom as well as individual services in home and community settings. For 13 years I was a co-teacher in an integrated Head Start classroom. This was by far the most challenging and exhilarating experience of my career. I was the leader of the special education professionals in the classroom and worked side by side with a general education teacher in planning, executing, and following up with daily activities. Together we evaluated and documented progress/outcomes/concerns to families and the administrative personnel of both programs as well as to the school districts and county officials. I have evaluated, written narrative, and created IEPS/IFSPs for at least 250 learners in my current position and have consulted with SLPs, OTs, and PTs as well as social workers, psychologists, and behavioral specialists to create the best possible programs for the children with whom I have interacted. My duties and responsibilities have been varied; not limited to day to day hands on instruction, communication and overseeing of classroom staff, interacting with numerous team members and coordinating weekly meetings, as well as initiating, executing, and evaluating programs for children while demonstrating best practices.
