  Awarded with a Churchill Fellowship to study the campaigns that have lead to gender equity reforms in pension systems internationally. I will travel to Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, The United States and Chile. Australia has a sophisticated retirement system but it is designed to reward those who experience long and uninterrupted working lives. As a result of this and other inequities, women are currently retiring with around half the retirement savings of men. The Australian Human Rights Commission has found that single elderly female households experience the highest incidence of poverty and are at the greatest risk of persistent poverty. A significant contributor to this is time out of the workforce. Other countries have recognised this and made structural changes to their pension and retirement systems to combat it. I aim to understand how public support for the reforms was achieved and to impart these lessons in Australia to change the poverty outcome for women here. Show less
