The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine participates in the care of virtually every Cedars-Sinai Medical Center patient, using the most sophisticated methods for making accurate diagnoses in all areas of anatomic and clinical pathology. In addition, the department provides expert consultation services to the outside community. Our expert pathologists and clinical scientists are committed to improving precision medicine approaches, advancing basic science and translational research, and providing excellent training and education. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine includes more than 45 faculty members representing Anatomic and Clinical, as well as Experimental and Translational Pathology. Our clinically oriented faculty members are fully subspecialized to provide rapid, accurate, sophisticated diagnoses and consultations in all areas of pathology. Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is a hospital with several large outpatient clinical services, serving the southwestern portion of Los Angeles County. It is one of the four main medical centers of the UCLA School of Medicine. The Division of Surgical Pathology accessions 11,000 tissue specimens yearly, from a full spectrum of patient demographics and clinical diagnoses. The Diagnostic Cytology Laboratory handles in excess of 9000 specimens per year of which there are 1,000 fine needle aspiration cytology specimens a year. The majority of the latter are performed by Pathology residents. Bone marrow aspirations approximate 350-400 a year; many of these utilize flow cytometry evaluation. About 250 specimens are evaluated every year in our Diagnostic Electron Microscopy Laboratory. In the Clinical Pathology Division, the number of analytical procedures is well in excess of 4,000,000 per year. The clinical laboratory features automated chemistry and hematology analysis with direct computer reporting via the hospital information computer system which also provides other clinical laboratory and surgical pathology reports to the hospital wards and clinics. Pathology residency is a fully ACGME approved four-year comprehensive, combined training core program in Anatomic and Clinical pathology. The training program accepts candidates who have had one year or more of training in a clinical specialty, medical research, transitional year internship, or new medical school graduates. The combined program features anatomic and clinical rotations integrated in every year. The core curriculum anatomic pathology rotations include autopsy pathology, surgical pathology, forensic pathology, exfoliative and aspiration cytology, neuropathology, molecular biology and diagnostic electron microscopy. The clinical pathology rotations are taken in clinical biochemistry and toxicology, hematopathology, HLA typing and cytogenetics, microbiology, immunopathology, and blood banking laboratories. I worked 32 hours per week, as Research Associate, under direct supervision of Nestor Gonzalez-Cadavid PhD. Working in the lab gave me the opportunity to learn different kind of techniques such as western blot, fixing tissues, paraffin embedding, frozen section, tissue sectioning, Immunohistochemestry, different kind of staining, cell culture including working with iPS and stem cells and improved my creativity and way of thinking to solve the problems. My area of research is: - Utilizing Stem Cells as a form of Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction (ED) - Muscle Derived Stem Cells (MDSC) - Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPS) I have co-authored 3 publications and 2 abstract presentations, and have been involved in stem cell research to determine which stem cells are most applicable to various urological disorders. www.labiomed.org Show less
