As a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mali, Mary oversaw a project to build a new schoolhouse in a small Bambara village. The project was an experiment in sustainable architecture, re-designing the typical Malian concrete block construction in favor of local materials, rainwater harvesting, and community participation. An additional goal of the project was to use its construction as a training program for an ongoing enterprise to support additional sustainable building practices throughout the country. Mary lived in a mud hut and loved it. Show less
