Development of a nonhydrostatic sigma-coordinate model.I introduced two microphysics schemes obtained from the NCAR WRF model into a new nonhydrostatic model being developed in South Africa. The two new schemes were used to study the effect of the presence of graupel on the simulation of an idealised two-dimensional thunderstorm. The updated model was also used to simulate active and suppressed convective periods during TOGA COARE over an eight and twelve day periods. The model is written in FORTRAN. Regional Climate Modelling using a stretched grid model.I am a part of a group that uses the Conformal Cubic Atmospheric Model (CCAM) developed in Australia to study climate change. My responsibilities included making sure that updated codes compile successfully on the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) machines, and making some multi-decadal simulations. I have also analysed the simulations to look at the change in heatwave numbers, intensity and duration for thirty year periods until 2100. I worked for the Centre for High Performance Computing as a project manager. I lead the organisation of the 2009 CHPC national meeting.

I am working as postdoctoral research fellow in a project title modelling the greyzone boundary layers. The available column based boundary layer schemes are suitable for low resolutions where the grid spacing is larger than the large eddies in the boundary layer, while the large eddy models are suitable when the grid spacing is smaller than the large eddies. In our project we aim to develop a scheme that is suitable for the greyzone where the grid spacing and the large eddies are of about the same length. The models used for this study are the UK Met Office Large Eddy Model and Unified Model.

I specialised on regional climate modelling on seasonal time scales. I was part of a group that developed a summer seasonal operational forecast using a regional climate model. I studied the internal variability of the RegCM3 over South Africa and wrote the results in an article published by the International Journal of Climatology and also reported the study in an MSc dissertation. I participated in the weekly extended range and monthly seasonal outlook forums, and also occasionally compiled the outlook.
