As others have reported, over twenty-three million Americans today live in low-income urban and rural neighborhoods that are miles away from supermarkets and, thus, miles away from fresh and affordable food choices. Food insecurity leads, people, suffer from chronic hunger and poor nutrition, and are, therefore, less likely to have healthy and productive lives. I became aware of the devastating impact that hunger, food, and nutrition insecurity has on our communities-at-large. As Executive Director, at Fish & Loaves, the largest, volunteer-driven "Client Choice" food pantry in the state of Michigan. I am responsible for finding innovative ways to increase organizational fundraising. Along with over 300 full and part-time volunteers, we organize annual events and use social media to raise revenue to support programs and services. I also meet with potential donors, individuals, and corporate leaders. As executive director, working with our board of directors, I also speak at charity benefits to promote our organization and develop new relationships with businesses and other non-profits. Individuals and corporations donated over 28,000 volunteer hours. Our non-profit organizations provide a variety of services for the public, including offering food to nutritionally & food insecure families, children, and the elderly. As executive director, I am responsible for implementing and expanding programs, including implementing a new software system and electronic checkout for food pantry clients. The expansion allows us to use data for program impact and to serves our clients. I have developed three new programs that have enhanced services, grew environmental awareness around the effects of food waste on communities, as we support healthy food choices. I set goals for all programs as I connect with local businesses, elected officials, and community leaders to gain knowledge of both food and nutrition insecurity and find support and resources for programs.
