May 2023 - Jun 2023
I participated in a two-week training at the WORLD Journalism Institute, after their most competitive application process in 25 years. As one of 32 students, wrote multiple stories on tight deadlines, produced both audio and video content, and practiced on-site reporting at multiple locations, including a press conference and presidential town hall. (See examples of audio / visual reels and one published clip below.) We also participated in multiple daily lectures on journalistic practice featuring speakers like Russell Pulliam of the Indianapolis Star, Les Sillars and Lynn Vincent of WORLD Magazine, Mark Volkers and Lee Pitts of Dordt University, and Nick Eicher and Paul Butler of WORLD Radio. Intern

Jan 2021 - Jul 2021
I started contributing to Grady County's only newspaper The Cairo Messenger, with a circulation of approx. 6,000 subscribers, as a high school sophomore. Submissions started out as profiles of fellow students, leading to the creation a column dubbed "Syrupmaker Scoop" that the student newspaper now handles; by senior year, my submissions included school events and some "soft news" community events. In the spring of my senior year, I began a paid internship with The Messenger through my high school's Work-Based Learning program. During my half-year employment, I gained experience in feature writing, photography and marketing, in addition to further developing on-site reporting skills. I resigned to prepare for college. Interning at The Messenger allowed me to use my love of people and natural curiosity to share stories that mattered to my community. Working in an office environment also allowed me to practice communication skills first-hand through interactions with my co-workers, editor and our customers. Show less
