I am honored to be among the exceptional professionals bringing the first Maternal-Fetal Medicine practice into the UCSF Benioff Children's Physicians growing family of practices. Our Prenatal Diagnostic Center serves much of the greater East Bay Area, providing genetic counseling, obstetric ultrasound, invasive diagnostic procedures, and non-invasive prenatal testing. Our prenatal care office specializes in the care and management of women with high-risk pregnancies, including a robust multidisciplinary Sweet Success, Diabetes in Pregnancy Program. Together with our community partners at UCSF Children's Hospital Oakland, and UCSF Health across the bay, it is our mission is to deliver premier perinatology services in a comprehensive collaborative setting, while maintaining continuity of care for our families throughout. • Clinical Services Manager
      • Nov 2005 - Jan 2016

Managing a large, high-risk, interdisciplinary medical practice is in fact more art that science. The pressures exerted are many, none of which are trivial: recruiting and maintaining a talented workforce; staffing and scheduling multiple settings and patient care programs; promoting an evidence-based, collaborative practice model across professional disciplines; developing and adjusting systems ongoing in response to significant practice changes as access to the healthcare dollar evolves; promoting and maintaining regulatory compliance and best practices - all of which intersect to influence patient outcomes, the ultimate priority. In order to succeed as Clinical Manager, three things became clear early on. First, receiving the respect of staff and colleagues is a privilege not a right; it must be earned. Second, the only way to lead effectively is to lead by example. Third, our practice, just like any large organization, represents a sort of living, breathing entity that can only thrive as a healthy balanced whole, rather than a collection of asynchronous compartmentalized concerns. Every corner has to be considered and attended to. Understanding the details is essential to developing successful systems when managing to evolving needs. However, I find it is the ability to visualize and maintain a wide-angle awareness of competing priorities, and consider how they will interact ongoing through change, that is key to maintaining a healthy organization. My passion for providing compassionate and effective management of both our patients and our practice, is better served by finding life balance; one cannot be there for others if they neglect themselves. Burnout is a real concern in any demanding work climate. Having co-authored and published two books - writing, and the process of bringing that project from idea to book-shelf - has been an enriching journey. I am reminded that challenging oneself in entirely new directions rarely disappoints. Show less

    • Nurse Practitioner
      • Jun 2000 - Jan 2016

Providing direct patient care as a Nurse Practitioner has been extremely grounding, often challenging, but most of all highly rewarding. Anyone who thrives by working in service to others, no matter what form that takes, will understand the sentiment. I found transitioning to a leadership role is really just a new step along that service continuum, however the “patient” in this case becomes a great deal more complex.
