Mary-Ann was one of the first reinsurers I dealt with when I was beginning my career in insurance a number of years ago. I remember fondly the first time we met in person. Eager to learn I must have fired her with questions about reinsurance, the market, how was it different from a primary insurer, along with the usual appetite validations. Mary-Ann had all the answers and we forged a great working relationship after that first meeting. Over the years, we worked on a range of placements varying from straight forward capacity requirements for light hazard risks, to slightly more complex placements. Mary-Ann was always available to discuss accounts and provide her professional underwriting opinion, or talk through options for structuring an account a particular way. Hearing what her key concerns and the main exposures were helped me learn the art of evaluating risk. Working in the only Vancouver reinsurance office, there were occasions when time was of the essence with last minute placements. Mary-Ann was always willing to make sure we had an option, whether that meant working late or shifting priorities to make sure we were not left without. Her dedication to the customers was always seen through her interactions with me and her prompt and timely response. With her many years of experience and diversity in the types of risks she has worked on, Mary-Ann would make a valuable asset to anyone’s team and organization in insurance.
