It gives me great pleasure and professional satisfaction to write this reference note for Marvi Mazhar. In 2007, Marvi was a student of the final year Architecture when I joined Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture (IVS) as its Executive Director (ED). She was approvingly noticeable as a student body representative who would challenge the administration for its inefficiency and ineptness. Later, when I got more familiar with Marvi as an ex-Graduate of the School, I witnessed her progression in life through her further studies in Architectural Heritage, professionalism, and her real life sincere contribution to the City of Karachi. From raising voice to expressing concerns on multiple issues related from city heritage, protection of our natural and built environment to health and safety of the citizens, Marvi has suddenly become an important sought after ‘opinion architect’ on the social media and among professional groups. Alongside, during my tenure (2007 to 2020) as the ED of IVS, I have also witnessed her evolution in academia when she started teaching Undergraduate students theory of Heritage Conservation as a visiting faculty. Later, she extended her academic endeavors to the IVS Graduate program and started linking narratives of Karachi for the learning and knowledge of the students through her guided tours. I feel this is her way of linking social activism with pure academic activities. Also, this allows Marvi to involve young people in her personal drive to solve matters and at least to raise awareness about the historical context within which solutions can be located for the burning issues in the trying circumstances of her City. In addition to teaching, Marvi demonstrates a high level leadership skills during her interaction with IVS Alumni, students, young people and community and enjoys the respect of all. Within the complex political and social context of Karachi, I have no hesitation in admitting that Marvi stands out as one of the best and successful professionals and IVS alumna who leads the way in her areas of specialization through her sincere efforts. I believe that Marvi will go a long way in the time to come to bring laurel to Pakistan and to her alma mater. I wish her well in all her endeavors. Samina Raees Khan Karachi September 2021

Marvi Mazhar has been a part of the panel of experts and resource persons for the 7th studio on, "Hyper Transforming Cities in South Asia - Case Karachi", organized by me at the International Masters Programme of the Faculty of Architecture at KULeuven University, Belgium. Her interaction with the students and participation in the discussions and juries were very valuable and added to the knowledge production regarding the thematic of hyper transformations in the cities of the South. I wish Marvi all the best in her endeavors, especially the pertinent and much-needed work she is doing in Karachi. Her projects are multidisciplinary and research-based, an approach very useful for the development of the city. Ar. Asiya Sadiq
