I was preparing for my C1 level Spanish exam when Hurricane Sandy hit the US East Coast. After being without power for a few days I decided to look for ways to help in the recovery effort. I heard of this opportunity on the radio and decided to join after seeing the devastation caused by the storm on Long Island. After completing a hazardous material technician course, I was deployed to the Farmingdale base. The company worked under the supervision of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The duties were related to environmental cleanup, including using containment booming to reduce water pollution; removing contaminated oil from basements and oil tanks. I worked 90-110 hours/week including a 32 day period without any days off. I had the opportunity to help and interact with people who were greatly impacted by the storm. This made the often tiresome work worthwhile. The long hours without having any days off was extremely stressful, but it was also a good experience to test my mental capacity, concentration and ability to work under difficult conditions. While the work was different from my main interests and qualifications, I enjoyed being part of the emergency response team. Show less
