Martina brought a confident, make-it-happen attitude into our residency for the Woodturning Center, this derived from the responsibilitues she had shouldered in her years with the Mumms Theatre. Although she didn't have a lot of experience in working solely with wood and especially green and bark-covered wood, Martina recognized the medium's potential for her voice and learned to use it in a manner that amazed and impreesed us all. Martina's artistic background meant that she did not feel hindered by the regular constraints and I now feel she is capable of exciting new work and directions following the 2008 ITE.

Martina Plag is a true professional and a great asset to any company lucky enough to work with her. She takes a great deal of personal initiative and was well-known for implementing both systemic and specific improvements at the company where we worked. There were multiple cases where the general drift of a project was visibly impelled and shaped by Martina's drive. Martina is also an excellent teacher and takes up new working methods with demonstrable rapidity and flexibility. Her work is always of a very high standard. Martina's sincere commitment to her work and her deeply impressive technical expertise are manifested in every work of hers I have been privileged to see. An uncommon, valuable, and always promising talent. I hope very much to be able to work with Martina again.

Around any physical war there is another war occurring: a war of popular culture, which does not obey the same rules of engagement. Wide Awake's singular Southern voice, the Scarlett O'Hara-inspired Dixie, is surrounded by a myriad of Northern voices—characters donning mustaches, Lincoln-style top hats, corsets, britches, and boots at various points throughout the cabaret's musical journey. Meet some of the era's historically marginalized characters—including the oft-forgot Julia Ward Howe, Angelina Grimké Wald, Abby Kelly Foster, and Philadelphian abolitionist Lucretia Mott. Part Gone With the Wind, part folk-punk extravaganza, join The Bearded Ladies as they test their hypothesis that the Civil War 'has been fought both before and after the actual event' and is being waged, even today. This event is part of PIFA 2013. Visit PIFA.org for a complete listing of events. Show less

The CEC is best known by artists and audiences alike for the 18-year old New Edge program. The program best represents the melding of two major aspects of the CEC's mission and core goals of building a sense of shared community through the use of the arts and supporting artists. The program is unique in the region and has greatly enriched the professional development and careers of a generation of local artists, launching many artists regionally and beyond, including Leah Stein, Eric Schoefer, Renee Banson, Robert Burden, Paul Turner, David Konyk, Nicole Canuso, Katharine Livingston, Rebecca Sloan, Asians Misbehavin' and Karen Carlson. Through the New Edge Program's two major components, the Residency and the Mix, the CEC has brought a generation of local artists together with community residents and audiences from across the region to interact as artist and audience, and as human beings to build understanding of one another and the arts.
