I joined Reco Hoist as a planner and scheduler at an exciting time when the company centralised all national operations to its new head office in St Ives, Cambridgeshire. I was tasked with setting up a new planning department within a fast moving business during an extremely demanding transition period. I quickly introduced key personnel changes and implemented new processes and procedures to ensure the business meets key customer targets safely and within budget. The planning department quickly demonstrated its worth by improving efficiencies, quality control and customer satisfaction across the board.A junior planner was introduced to work alongside me and I was soon promoted to operations manager. This restructure has allowed me to continue working on improvements throughout operations, tackling mistakes head on, investigating each one until the root cause is identified, allowing the problem to be managed out and any barriers removed.

This role was very diverse and involved working within a wide range of different departments. I was responsible for managing important aspects of the planning and coordination of day to day maintenance tasks and projects, along with planning high priority site and equipment inspections. I ensured the correct trades and materials were allocated to each task allowing safe execution within specified timeframes and budgets. Working to tight deadlines was a crucial aspect of the role in order to avoid disruption to production schedules.I successfully introduced many safety initiatives and new technologies, helping to improve safety standards and efficiencies throughout. Communication with management, engineers and contractors was crucial; and I regularly attended and chaired site progress and safety meetings, playing a key role in ensuring all Health and Safety procedures and processes were adhered to.

I successfully managed a team of scaffolders across a major British Sugar site, planning and installing complex scaffolds in challenging confined spaces throughout the site. Working to tight deadlines was a priority, thereby ensuring production at the plant remained uninterrupted.I was offered a transfer to BP Kineil to become a scaffold inspector and was tasked with inspecting all scaffolds. During my time at Kineil I created a new scaffold scoping system and designed an electronic F91 scaffold register, which meant less time was spent in the office and more time out inspecting, resulting in a better use of my time and that of my colleagues. My experience and knowledge was soon recognised and I was offered a 3 month trial in a brand new position within a busy ExxonMobil maintenance department, located in Fife. I quickly set to work on making this position my own by implementing huge improvements which led to increasing efficiency and cost savings in the scaffolding, insulation and painting divisions. I continued to impress the client which resulted in my securing a permanent position. My responsibilities continued to grow and I soon found myself safely planning and coordinating numerous projects up to the value of £1.3million. I was also allocated a central role on a major efficiency project which the site is now leading throughout Europe.

    • Advanced Scaffolder/Charge Hand/Inspector
      • Apr 2004 - Feb 2013

After joining Narford Scaffolding Ltd I demonstrated extremely high standards and my desire to succeed was soon recognised. I quickly progressed through the ranks learning valuable new skills and found myself safely managing many small, medium and large projects. These works included major refurbishment projects on a Pharmaceutical plant in Cambridgeshire, specialist confined space work for the main water boards throughout England and Wales, water tower refurbishments and high profile Network Rail projects which included the re-roof of London’s Kings Cross railway station. I was responsible for planning daily scaffold tasks ensuring the teams were complying with the current safety standards, inspecting scaffolds, ordering materials and attending safety and progress meetings with the clients.

After leaving the Army in 2001, I joined Hertel UK Ltd. to start an apprenticeship in thermal insulation. This apprenticeship proved invaluable but career progression at the time in this particular field was limited. I decided it was not the career for me and moved into the scaffolding division within the company.
