For 3Q 2013, as part of a small Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) Informatics and Global Health workgroup, I was engaged in developing a curriculum on LIMS/LIS implementation and writing presentations for a week long symposium in Africa. APHL/CDC and the African Center for Integrated Laboratory Training (ACILT) sponsored a Laboratory Information Systems Workshop for Ministries of Health officials in sub-Saharan Africa on why these nations need a public health LIMS and just how to successfully implement such a project or how to expand a pre-existing LIS. The workshop was held from 9/30 to 10/3 at the National Health Laboratory Service facilities in Johannesburg, South Africa. My topics included how to implement a LIS, data quality assurance and LIS sustainability.
